Welcome to the online hub for the South Dallas Greening Initiative, a transformative, multi-pronged effort to revitalize South Dallas neighborhoods through maximizing the benefits of trees and green spaces for the health and wellbeing of all.
Paid for through the Inflation Reduction Act and the USDA Forest Service, Urban and Community Forestry Program, the Texas Trees Foundation is spearheading a community and grass-roots effort to plant 3,500 new trees over the next five years with the goal of creating a self-sustaining urban forest that supports thousands of residents and their mental and physical health for generations to come.
Fair Park and the neighborhoods surrounding it were selected for the greening initiative using the Texas Trees’ Tree Equity Planting map that showed Council District 7 as a high-priority area. We then facilitated community feedback to ensure the diverse needs and perspectives of the residents of Fair Park and surrounding neighborhoods were included and considered within the design.
This project advances South Dallas toward achieving the city’s 2040 target of 37% tree canopy.
HIGH-PRIORITY AREA
- Average tree canopy by neighborhood block: 21.8%
- Portions of South Dallas are nearly 6 degrees hotter than the city’s average temperature
- Portions of South Dallas have as little as 10% canopy coverage largely due to roadway infrastructure
- Canopy loss between 2012 and 2022 has occurred largely in the south-central areas of South Dallas.
