Storm Recovery Tree Giveaway

Texas Trees Foundation is proud to partner with the Arbor Day Foundation and International Paper to give away 500 free trees to residents who were affected by the October 2019 tornado.

Richardson, Texas residents will also have another opportunity on November 21 to receive a complimentary tree. For more information, sign up for our newsletter here.

What is included in the tree giveaway?

The following will be loaded into your car trunk:

• One predetermined tree
• One bag of mulch
• Tree planting guide

Why are we giving away trees?

On October 20, 2019 a devastating tornado tore through North Dallas impacting people’s lives in a traumatic way. The most lasting effect is the tree canopy many of these neighborhoods lost, and whose once very character was often defined by tree lined streets.

Texas Trees Foundation Urban Foresters conducted an initial survey of the affected areas and determined that between 3,000-3,500 trees have been damaged to the point that they will need to be removed, and another 1,200-1,500 trees have some level of damage that will need additional pruning over the coming months and years to restore their canopy. By distributing these 500 trees, Texas Trees Foundation, Arbor Day Foundation and International Paper are helping to replant those lost trees.

What type of trees are being offered?

Tree species available include Red Maple, Red Oak, Chinquapin Oak, Redbud and Desert Willow. Learn more about each tree type by reading the graphic below:

Tree Pickup Safety Guidelines

Texas Trees Foundation (TTF) is committed to the safety and wellness of all parties involved in the tree giveaway and is conducting a contactless tree pick-up.  TTF staff will be wearing gloves and masks during the entire giveaway. All vehicle occupants are required to wear face protection inside their vehicles at-all times.  The increased safety measures will reduce unnecessary exposure to people and COVID-19.

Tips for Preparedness

• Line the inside of your trunk vehicle with cardboard or a trash bag to limit soil and water from spilling in the trunk
• Lower back row of seats leading to the trunk before arriving so that the entire tree can fit into the vehicle
• Bring a larger vehicle if possible
• Trees will be in a 5-gallon container and 5-6 feet tall
